Background: Non-optimum temperatures are associated with a considerable mortality burden. However, evidence of temperature with all-cause and cause-specific hospital admissions in tropical countries like Thailand is still limited. Methods: Daily all-cause and cause-specific hospital admissions for outpatient and inpatient visits were collected from 77 provinces in Thailand from January 2013 to August 2019. A two-stage time-series approach was applied to assess the association between non-optimum temperatures and hospital admission. We first fitted the province-specific temperature-morbidity association and then obtained the national association in the second stage using a random-effects meta-analysis regression. The attributable fraction (AF) of hospital admissions with 95% empirical confidence interval (eCI) was calculated. Findings: A total of 878,513,460 all-cause outpatient admissions and 32,616,600 all-cause inpatient admissions were included in this study. We observed a J-shaped relationship with the risk of hospital admissions increasing for both cold and hot temperatures. The overall AFs of all-cause hospital admissions due to non-optimum temperatures were 7.57% (95% eCI: 6.47%, 8.39%) for outpatient visits and 6.17% (95% eCI: 4.88%, 7.20%) for inpatient visits. Hot temperatures were responsible for most of the AFs of hospital admissions, with 6.71% (95% eCI: 5.80%, 7.41%) for outpatient visits and 4.50% (95% eCI: 3.62%, 5.19%) for inpatient visits. The burden of hospital admissions was greater in females and in children and adolescents (0-19 years). The fractions of hospital admissions attributable to non-optimum temperatures exhibited variation among disease categories and geographical areas. Interpretation: The results indicate that low and high temperature has a significant impact on hospital admissions, especially among the females, and children and adolescents (0-19 years). The current investigation could provide evidence for policymakers to develop adaptation strategies and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on public health in Thailand and other tropical countries. BACKGROUND: The association between long-term exposure to ozone (O3) and adult-onset asthma (AOA) remains inconclusive, and analysis of causality is lacking. OBJECTIVES: To examine the causal association between long-term O3 exposure and AOA. METHODS: A prospective cohort study of 362,098 participants was conducted using the UK Biobank study. Incident cases of AOA were identified using health administrative data of the National Health Services. O3 exposure at participants' residential addresses was estimated by a spatio-temporal model. Instrumental variable (IV) modelling was used to analyze the causal association between O3 exposure and AOA, by incorporating wind speed and planetary boundary layer height as IVs into time-dependent Cox model. Negative control outcome (accidental injury) was also used to additionally evaluate unmeasured confounding. RESULTS: During a mean follow-up of 11.38 years, a total of 10,973 incident AOA cases were identified. A U-shaped concentration-response relationship was observed between O3 exposure and AOA in the traditional Cox models with HR of 0.917 (95% CI: 0.889, 0.946) for O3 at low levels (<38.17 ppb), and 1.198 (95% CI: 1.162, 1.236) for O3 at high levels (≥38.17 ppb). However, in the IV analysis we only found a statistically significant association between high-level O3 exposure and AOA risk, but not for low-level O3 exposure. No significant associations between O3 exposure and accidental injury were observed. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest a potential causal relationship between long-term exposure to high-level ambient O3 and increased risks of AOA.

To develop effective antibiotics alternatives is getting more and more important to poultry healthy production. The study investigated the effects of a microencapsulated essential oils and organic acids preparation (EOA) on growth performance, slaughter performance, nutrient digestibility and intestinal microenvironment of broilers. A total of 624 1-day-old male Arbor Acres broilers were randomly divided into 6 groups including the control group (T1) fed with basal diet, the antibiotic group (T2) supplemented with basal diet with 45 mg/kg bacitracin methylene disalicylate (BMD), and 4 inclusion levels of EOA-treated groups (T3, T4, T5, T6 groups) chickens given basal diet with 200, 400, 600, and 800 mg EOA/kg of diet, respectively. Results showed that compared with the control, the 200 mg/kg EOA group increased average daily gain (ADG) and average body weight (ABW) during the early stage (P < 0.05). EOA addition decreased crypt depth of the ileum (P < 0.05), but villus height to crypt depth ratio was increased by EOA addition at 200 and 400 mg/kg at d 21 (P < 0.05). Compared with the control, dietary addition EOA at 200, 400 and 600 mg/kg increased the lipase activity in the duodenum at d 21 (P < 0.05). Increased lactic acid bacteria population was found in cecal digesta of the 400 mg/kg EOA group at d 21 (P < 0.05), and higher concentration of butyric acid level was observed in cecal digesta at d 21 and d 42 in the 200 mg/kg EOA group compared with the control (P < 0.05). RT-PCR analysis found that dietary EOA addition decreased the gene expression of IL-1ß, COX-2 and TGF-ß4 in the ileum at d 21 (P < 0.05), while only the 200 mg/kg EOA increased the gene expression of IL-10, TGF-ß4, Claudin-1, ZO-1, CATH-1, CATH-3, AvBD-1, AvBD-9 and AvBD-12 in the ileum at d 42 (P < 0.05) compared with the control. In summary, adding 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg of the EOA to the diet could improve the growth performance and intestinal microenvironment through improving intestinal morphology, increasing digestive enzymes activity and cecal lactic acid bacteria abundance and butyric acid content, improving intestinal barrier function as well as maintaining intestinal immune homeostasis. The improving effect induced by EOA addition in the early growth stage was better than that in the later growth stage. Overall, the EOA product might be an effective antibiotic alternative for broiler industry.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal fine particulate matter (PM2.5) constituents exposure and reduced fetal growth may be risk factors for accelerated growth in early childhood, an important indicator for lifelong health. OBJECTIVE: The study investigated whether the joint effects are present between PM2.5 constituents and reduced fetal growth. METHODS: The study was embedded in a birth cohort in China, including 5424 mother-child pairs. Prenatal PM2.5 and its constituents' [organic carbon (OC), elementary carbon (EC), ammonium (NH4+), nitrate (NO3-), and sulfate (SO42-)] concentrations were estimated based on maternal residential addresses. Fetal growth was evaluated by fetal growth trajectory in utero and preterm birth (PTB), low birth weight (LBW), and small for gestational age (SGA). Children's accelerated growth was defined as body mass index (BMI) Z-score change of >0.67 between birth and 3 years. Generalized logistic regression was used to analyze the effects of prenatal PM2.5 constituents exposure and fetal growth on children's accelerated growth. Joint effect was tested on multiplicative scale and additive scale with the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI). RESULTS: Children with lower fetal growth trajectory, PTB, LBW, and SGA had increased odds of children's accelerated growth, with odds ratios (ORs) ranging from 1.704 to 11.605. Compared with lower exposure (≤median), higher exposure (>median) of PM2.5, OC, and SO42- were significantly associated with increased odds of children's accelerated growth, varying in ORs from 1.163 to 1.478. Prenatal exposure to OC had joint effects with lower fetal growth on children's accelerated growth. We observed that the interaction was statistically significant on an additive scale in OC and lower fetal growth trajectory (RERI: 0.497, 95% CI: 0.033,0.962). IMPACT: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a huge threat to human health worldwide, causing 6.7 million death globally in 2019. According to the theory of DOHaD, prenatal PM2.5 exposure could influence early childhood growth, which is important for lifelong health. We found that prenatal exposure to PM2.5, OC, and SO42- was associated with higher risk of accelerated childhood growth in the first 3 years. More importantly, reduced fetal growth moderated these associations. Our findings highlight the need for policies and interventions on PM2.5 constituents to improve lifelong health, especially for those vulnerable populations with reduced fetal growth.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) can induce systemic inflammatory response (SIR) in animals. Understanding the regulatory mechanism of SIR and therapies to ensure healthy growth is urgently needed. Chromatin remodeling plays a crucial role in the expression of genes involved in immune diseases. In the present study, the ATAC-seq analysis revealed 3491 differential open chromatin sites in the spleen of chicks with SIR induced by LPS challenge, and we presented the motifs on these sites and the associated transcription factors. The regulatory network was presented by combining the differential open chromatin data with the mRNAs and exploded cytokines. Interestingly, the LPS challenge could regulate the mRNA expression of 202 genes through chromatin reprogramming, including critical genes such as TLE1 and JUN, which regulate signaling pathways such as I-κB kinase/NF-κB, Toll-like receptor, and downstream cytokine genes. Furthermore, dietary daidzein could inhibit DNA topoisomerase II, which reprograms the spatial conformation of chromatin in the inflammatory response and attenuates SIR. In conclusion, we successfully identified key genes directly regulated by chromatin reprogramming in SIR and demonstrated the chromatin epigenome signatures and transcriptional regulatory network, which provides an important reference for further research on avian epigenetics. There is great potential for alleviating SIR using dietary daidzein.

As an enzyme, ß-mannanase (BM) can be widely used as feed additive to improve the growth performance of animals. This experiment aimed to determine the effect of the addition of BM to low-energy diet on the immune function and intestinal microflora of broiler chickens. In this study, 384 one-day-old Arbor Acres broilers were randomly divided into 3 groups (8 replicates per group): positive control (PC, received a corn-soybean meal basal diet), negative control (NC, received a low-energy diet with Metabolizable Energy (ME) reduced by 50 kcal/kg) and NC + BM group (NC birds + 100 mg/kg BM). All birds were raised for 42 d. The results showed that BM mitigated the damage of immune function in peripheral blood of broilers caused by the decrease of dietary energy level by increasing the Concanavalin A (Con A) index of stimulation (SI) and macrophages phagocytic activity in the peripheral blood of broilers at 42 d (P < 0.05). The analysis of cecum flora showed that the low-energy diet significantly reduced the observed_species index (P < 0.01), Chao1 index and ACE index (P < 0.05), which reduced the abundance and evenness of species in the cecum of broilers at 21 d. It also significantly reduced the relative abundance of Candidatus_Arthromitus and significantly increased the relative abundance of Pseudomonas in the cecum of broilers at 21 d, while also significantly increasing the relative abundance of Monoglobus at 42 d. BM significantly increased the relative abundance of Lachnospiraceae_UCG-001 and Lachnospiraceae_bacterium_615 in the cecum of broilers at 21 d. In addition, BM inhibited microbial Fatty acid degradation by decreasing the activity of glutaryl-CoA dehydrogenase. Collectively, BM could improve intestinal health by enhancing the immune function of broilers, promoting the proliferation of beneficial bacteria and reducing the number of harmful bacteria, regulating intestinal flora, thereby alleviating the adverse effects of lower dietary energy levels.

BACKGROUND: Mounting evidence has demonstrated that high temperature was associated with adverse health outcomes, especially morbidity and mortality. Nonetheless, the impact of extreme high temperature on cognitive performance, which is the fundamental capacity for interpreting one's surroundings, decision-making, and acquiring new abilities, has not been thoroughly investigated. METHODS: We aimed to assess associations between extreme high temperature at different time scales and poor cognitive function. We used longitudinal survey data from the three waves of data from China Family Panel Study, providing an 8-year follow-up of 53,008 participants from China. We assessed temperature and extreme high temperature exposure for each participant based on the residential area and date of cognitive test. We defined the proportion of days/hours above 32 °C as the metric of the exposure to extreme high temperature. Then we used generalized additive model and difference-in-differences approach to explore the associations between extreme high temperature and cognitive function. RESULTS: Our results demonstrated that either acute exposure or long-term exposure to extreme high temperature was associated with cognitive decline. At hourly level, 0-1 hour acute exposure to extreme high temperature would induce -0.93 % (95 % CI: -1.46 %, -0.39 %) cognitive change. At annual level, 10 percentage point increase in the hours proportion exceeding 32 °C in the past two years induced -9.87 % (95 % CI: -13.99 %, -5.75 %) cognitive change. Furthermore, subgroup analyses indicated adaptation effect: for the same 10 percentage increase in hours proportion exceeding 32 °C, people in warmer areas had cognitive change of -6.41 % (-11.22 %, -1.61 %), compared with -15.30 % (-21.07 %, -9.53 %) for people in cool areas. CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrated that extreme high temperature was associated with reduced cognitive function at hourly, daily and annual levels, warning that people should take better measures to protect the cognitive function in the context of climate change.

The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to screen drug molecules with potential therapeutic effects has revolutionized the drug discovery process, with significantly lower economic cost and time consumption than the traditional drug discovery pipeline. With the great power of AI, it is possible to rapidly search the vast chemical space for potential drug-target interactions (DTIs) between candidate drug molecules and disease protein targets. However, only a small proportion of molecules have labelled DTIs, consequently limiting the performance of AI-based drug screening. To solve this problem, a machine learning-based approach with great ability to generalize DTI prediction across molecules is desirable. Many existing machine learning approaches for DTI identification failed to exploit the full information with respect to the topological structures of candidate molecules. To develop a better approach for DTI prediction, we propose GraphormerDTI, which employs the powerful Graph Transformer neural network to model molecular structures. GraphormerDTI embeds molecular graphs into vector-format representations through iterative Transformer-based message passing, which encodes molecules' structural characteristics by node centrality encoding, node spatial encoding and edge encoding. With a strong structural inductive bias, the proposed GraphormerDTI approach can effectively infer informative representations for out-of-sample molecules and as such, it is capable of predicting DTIs across molecules with an exceptional performance. GraphormerDTI integrates the Graph Transformer neural network with a 1-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (1D-CNN) to extract the drugs' and target proteins' representations and leverages an attention mechanism to model the interactions between them. To examine GraphormerDTI's performance for DTI prediction, we conduct experiments on three benchmark datasets, where GraphormerDTI achieves a superior performance than five state-of-the-art baselines for out-of-molecule DTI prediction, including GNN-CPI, GNN-PT, DeepEmbedding-DTI, MolTrans and HyperAttentionDTI, and is on a par with the best baseline for transductive DTI prediction. Model-estimated air pollution exposure assessments have been extensively employed in the evaluation of health risks associated with air pollution. However, few studies synthetically evaluate the reliability of model-estimated PM2.5 products in health risk assessment by comparing them with ground-based monitoring station air quality data. In response to this gap, we undertook a meticulously structured systematic review and meta-analysis. Our objective was to aggregate existing comparative studies to ascertain the disparity in mortality effect estimates derived from model-estimated ambient PM2.5 exposure versus those based on monitoring station-observed PM2.5 exposure. We conducted searches across multiple databases, namely PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, using predefined keywords. Ultimately, ten studies were included in the review. Of these, seven investigated long-term annual exposure, while the remaining three studies focused on short-term daily PM2.5 exposure. Despite variances in the estimated Exposure-Response (E-R) associations, most studies revealed positive associations between ambient PM2.5 exposure and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, irrespective of the exposure being estimated through models or observed at monitoring stations. Our meta-analysis revealed that all-cause mortality risk associated with model-estimated PM2.5 exposure was in line with that derived from station-observed sources. The pooled Relative Risk (RR) was 1.083 (95% CI: 1.047, 1.119) for model-estimated exposure, and 1.089 (95% CI: 1.054, 1.125) for station-observed sources (p = 0.795). In conclusion, most model-estimated air pollution products have demonstrated consistency in estimating mortality risk compared to data from monitoring stations. However, only a limited number of studies have undertaken such comparative analyses, underscoring the necessity for more comprehensive investigations to validate the reliability of these model-estimated exposure in mortality risk assessment.

Brazil has experienced unprecedented wildfires recently. We aimed to investigate the association of wildfire-related fine particulate matter (PM2.5) with cause-specific cardiovascular mortality, and to estimate the attributable mortality burden. Exposure to wildfire-related PM2.5 was defined as exposure to annual mean wildfire-related PM2.5 concentrations in the 1-year prior to death. The variant difference-in-differences method was employed to explore the wildfire-related PM2.5-cardiovascular mortality association. We found that, in Brazil, compared with the population in the first quartile (Q1: ≤1.82 µg/m3) of wildfire-related PM2.5 exposure, those in the fourth quartile (Q4: 4.22-17.12 µg/m3) of wildfire-related PM2.5 exposure had a 2.2% (RR: 1.022, 95% CI: 1.013-1.032) higher risk for total cardiovascular mortality, 3.1% (RR: 1.031, 95% CI: 1.014-1.048) for ischaemic heart disease mortality, and 2.0% (RR: 1.020, 95% CI: 1.002-1.038) for stroke mortality. From 2010 to 2018, an estimation of 35,847 (95% CI: 22,424-49,177) cardiovascular deaths, representing 17.77 (95% CI: 11.12-24.38) per 100,000 population, were attributable to wildfire-related PM2.5 exposure. Targeted health promotion strategies should be developed for local governments to protect the public from the risk of wildfire-related cardiovascular premature deaths.

BACKGROUND: The acute health effects of short-term (hours to days) exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2·5) have been well documented; however, the global mortality burden attributable to this exposure has not been estimated. We aimed to estimate the global, regional, and urban mortality burden associated with short-term exposure to PM2·5 and the spatiotemporal variations in this burden from 2000 to 2019. METHODS: We combined estimated global daily PM2·5 concentrations, annual population counts, country-level mortality rates, and epidemiologically derived exposure-response functions to estimate the mortality attributable to short-term PM2·5 exposure from 2000 to 2019, in the continental regions and in 13 189 urban centres worldwide at a spatial resolution of 0·1°â€ˆ× 0·1°. We tested the robustness of our mortality estimates with different theoretical minimum risk exposure levels, lag effects, and exposure-response functions. FINDINGS: Approximately 1 million (95% CI 690 000-1·3 million) premature deaths per year from 2000 to 2019 were attributable to short-term PM2·5 exposure, representing 2·08% (1·41-2·75) of total global deaths or 17 (11-22) premature deaths per 100 000 population. Annually, 0·23 million (0·15 million-0·30 million) deaths attributable to short-term PM2·5 exposure were in urban areas, constituting 22·74% of the total global deaths attributable to this cause and accounting for 2·30% (1·56-3·05) of total global deaths in urban areas. The sensitivity analyses showed that our worldwide estimates of mortality attributed to short-term PM2·5 exposure were robust. INTERPRETATION: Short-term exposure to PM2·5 contributes a substantial global mortality burden, particularly in Asia and Africa, as well as in global urban areas. Our results highlight the importance of mitigation strategies to reduce short-term exposure to air pollution and its adverse effects on human health. Epidemiological evidence for long-term air pollution exposure and Parkinson's disease (PD) is controversial, and analysis of causality is limited. We identified 293,888 participants who were free of PD at baseline in the UK Biobank (2006-2010). Time-varying air pollution [fine particulate (PM2.5) and ozone (O3)] exposures were estimated using spatio-temporal models. Incident cases of PD were identified using validated algorithms. Four methods were used to investigate the associations between air pollution and PD, including (1) standard time-varying Cox proportional-hazard model; (2) Cox models weighted by generalized propensity score (GPS) and inverse-probability weights (IPW); (3) instrumental variable (IV) analysis; and (4) negative control outcome analysis. During a median of 11.6 years of follow-up, 1822 incident PD cases were identified. Based on standard Cox regression, the hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) for a 1 µg/m3 or ppb increase in PM2.5 and O3 were 1.23 (1.17, 1.30) and 1.02 (0.98, 1.05), respectively. Consistent results were found in models weighted by GPS and IPW, and in IV analysis. There were no significant associations between air pollution and negative control outcomes. This study provides evidence to support a causal association between PM2.5 exposure and PD. Mitigation of air pollution could be a protective measure against PD.

The China Undergraduate Cohort (CUC) is an ambispective cohort study with its major purpose to better understand the effects of lifetime environmental exposures on health outcomes. We recruited 5322 college students with an average age of 18.3 ± 0.7 years in China from August 23, 2019 to October 28, 2019. Follow-up surveys were conducted annually. The dataset comprises individual demographic data (e.g. age, sex, height, weight, birth date, race, home address, annual family income, contact information), health-related behavior data (smoking status, smoking cessation, passive smoking exposure, drinking habit, physical activity, dietary status), lifestyle data (physical exercise, dietary habit, length of time spent outdoors), disease history (respiratory disease history, cardiovascular disease history, urinary system disease history, etc.), mental health status data (sleep quality, self-reported stress, anxiety and depression symptoms), lung function and blood samples data. Preliminary results from our cohort have found the association between air pollution, summer heat and mercury exposure and lung function among young adults in China.

Importance: Preterm birth (PTB) is associated with adverse health outcomes. The outcomes of heat exposure during pregnancy and the moderating association of greenness with PTB remain understudied. Objective: To investigate associations between heat exposure, greenness, and PTB, as well as interactions between these factors. Design, Setting, and Participants: Included in this cohort study were births occurring in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, between 2000 and 2020, retrieved from New South Wales Midwives Data Collection. Participants with incomplete or missing data on their residential address or those who resided outside of New South Wales during their pregnancy were excluded. Data were analyzed from March to October 2023. Exposures: Greenness measured using normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and tree cover derived from satellite images. Daily extreme heat and nighttime extreme heat were defined as above the 95th percentile of community- and trimester-specific daily mean temperatures and nighttime temperatures. Main Outcomes and Measures: Logistic regression models estimated the independent association of extreme heat with PTB, adjusting for individual- and area-level covariates, season of conception, and long-term trend. An interaction term between extreme heat exposure and greenness was included to explore potential modification. With a significant interaction observed, the number of preventable heat-associated PTBs that were associated with greenness was estimated. Results: A total of 1 225 722 births (median [IQR] age, 39 [38-40] weeks; 631 005 male [51.5%]) were included in the analysis, including 63 144 PTBs (median [IQR] age, 35 [34-36] weeks; 34 822 male [55.1%]). Compared with those without heat exposure, exposure to daily extreme heat and nighttime extreme heat in the third trimester was associated with increased risks of PTB, with an adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 1.61 (95% CI, 1.55-1.67) and 1.51 (95% CI, 1.46-1.56]), respectively (PTB rates: exposed, 4615 of 61 338 [7.5%] vs unexposed, 56 440 of 1 162 295 [4.9%] for daily extreme heat and 4332 of 61 337 [7.1%] vs 56 723 of 1 162 296 [4.9%] for nighttime extreme heat). Disparities in associations between extreme heat exposure and PTB were observed, with lower odds of PTB among pregnant individuals residing in greener areas. The associations between extreme heat exposure and PTB could be mitigated significantly by higher greenness. Improving NDVI and tree cover could reduce daily extreme heat-associated PTB by 13.7% (95% CI, 2.3%-15.1%) and 20.9% (95% CI, 5.8%-31.5%), respectively. For nighttime extreme heat-associated PTB, reductions were 13.0% (0.2%-15.4%) and 17.2% (4.1%-27.0%), respectively. Conclusions and Relevance: Results of this large birth cohort study suggest that extreme heat exposure was adversely associated with PTB, with greenness playing a moderating role. Increasing greenness levels in residential communities could prevent heat-associated PTBs. These findings emphasize the importance of integrating heat mitigation strategies and improving green space in urban planning and public health interventions.

This study optimized the menaquinone-7 (MK-7) synthetic pathways in Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) natto NB205, a strain that originated from natto, to enhance its MK-7 production. Utilizing mutation breeding, we developed NBMK308, a mutant strain that demonstrated a significant 117.23% increase in MK-7 production. A comprehensive transcriptome analysis identified two key genes, ispA and ispE, as being critical in MK-7 synthesis. The dual-sgRNA CRISPRa system was utilized to achieve precise regulation of ispA and ispE in the newly engineered strain, A3E3. This strategic modulation resulted in a significant enhancement of MK-7 production, achieving increases of 20.02% and 201.41% compared to traditional overexpression systems and the original strain NB205, respectively. Furthermore, the fermentation supernatant from A3E3 notably inhibited Salmonella invasion in Caco-2 cells, showcasing its potential for combating such infections. The safety of the dual-sgRNA CRISPRa system was confirmed through cell assays. The utilization of the dual-sgRNA CRISPRa system in this study was crucial for the precise regulation of key genes in MK-7 synthesis, leading to a remarkable increase in production and demonstrating additional therapeutic potential in inhibiting pathogenic infections. This approach effectively combined the advantages of microbial fermentation and biotechnology, addressing health and nutritional challenges.

Enormous health burden has been associated with air pollution and its effects continue to grow. However, the impact of air pollution on labour productivity at the population level is still unknown. This study assessed the association between premature death due to PM2.5 exposure and the loss of productivity-adjusted life years (PALYs), in Brazil. We applied a novel variant of the difference-in-difference (DID) approach to assess the association. Daily all-cause mortality data in Brazil were collected from 2000-2019. The PALYs lost increased by 5.11% (95% CI: 4.10-6.13%), for every 10 µg/m3 increase in the 2-day moving average of PM2.5. A total of 9,219,995 (95% CI: 7,491,634-10,921,141) PALYs lost and US$ 268.05 (95% CI: 217.82-317.50) billion economic costs were attributed to PM2.5 exposure, corresponding to 7.37% (95% CI: 5.99-8.73%) of the total PALYs lost due to premature death. This study also found that 5,005,306 PALYs could be avoided if the World Health Organization (WHO) air quality guideline (AQG) level was met. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that ambient PM2.5 exposure is associated with a considerable labour productivity burden relating to premature death in Brazil, while over half of the burden could be prevented if the WHO AQG was met. The findings highlight the need to reduce ambient PM2.5 levels and provide strong evidence for the development of strategies to mitigate the economic impacts of air pollution.

Short-term exposure to ground-level ozone in cities is associated with increased mortality and is expected to worsen with climate and emission changes. However, no study has yet comprehensively assessed future ozone-related acute mortality across diverse geographic areas, various climate scenarios, and using CMIP6 multi-model ensembles, limiting our knowledge on future changes in global ozone-related acute mortality and our ability to design targeted health policies. Here, we combine CMIP6 simulations and epidemiological data from 406 cities in 20 countries or regions. We find that ozone-related deaths in 406 cities will increase by 45 to 6,200 deaths/year between 2010 and 2014 and between 2050 and 2054, with attributable fractions increasing in all climate scenarios (from 0.17% to 0.22% total deaths), except the single scenario consistent with the Paris Climate Agreement (declines from 0.17% to 0.15% total deaths). These findings stress the need for more stringent air quality regulations, as current standards in many countries are inadequate.

This experiment aimed to investigate the effect of Lonicerae flos and Turmeric extracts (LTE) added to diets on growth performance and intestinal health of broilers. A total of 720 healthy 21-day-old yellow-feathered broilers were randomly divided into 3 treatment groups, with 6 replicates and 40 broilers per replicate. These 3 dietary treatments included a basal diet + 0 g/t LTE (CON), a basal diet + 300 g/t LTE (LTE300), and a basal diet + 500 g/t LTE (LTE500). The results showed that dietary supplementation of LTE linearly increased (P < 0.05) average daily gain (d 21-38) and average daily feed intake (d 21-60). At d 60, LTE300 had the highest serum total antioxidant capacity and total superoxide dismutase (P < 0.05), and LTE500 had the lowest malondialdehyde level (P < 0.05) among the three groups. Moreover, compared to CON, LTE300 significantly (P < 0.05) reduced endotoxin (d 38 and d 60) and diamine oxidase activity (d 38); LTE500 significantly (P < 0.05) reduced endotoxin (d 38 and d 60) and diamine oxidase levels (d 60) in the serum. LTE groups significantly (P < 0.05) increased ileal the ratio of villus height to crypt depth and serum immunoglobulin G. Furthermore, dietary supplementation of LTE also improved the intestinal epithelial barrier by the up-regulated mRNA expression of Claudin-1, Occludin and zonula occludens-1, and decreased the mRNA expression of interleukin-2, interleukin-8, tumor necrosis factor-α, nuclear factor κB, myeloid differentiation factor 88 and toll-like receptor 4. Compared to CON, 16S rRNA sequencing analysis showed that LTE300 had a better effect on the microbial diversity and composition in the ileum, and Bacillus and Lactobacillus_agilis were significantly enriched in LTE300. PICRUSt results showed that LTE300 was significantly (P < 0.05) enriched in four pathway pathways at KEGG level 2. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with LTE improved growth performance and intestinal health by enhancing antioxidant capacity, intestinal barrier and immune function, and regulating intestinal flora of yellow-feathered broilers.

Particulate of diameter ≤ 1 µm (PM1) presents a novel risk factor of adverse health effects. Nevertheless, the association of PM1 with the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the general population is not well understood, particularly in regions with high PM1 levels like China. Based on a nationwide representative survey involving 47,204 adults and multi-source ambient air pollution inversion data, the present study evaluated the association of PM1 with CKD prevalence in China. The two-year average PM1, particulate of diameter ≤ 2.5 µm (PM2.5), and PM1-2.5 values were accessed using a satellite-based random forest approach. CKD was defined as estimated glomerular filtration rate < 60 ml/min/1.73 m2 or albuminuria. The results suggested that a 10 µg/m3 rise in PM1 was related to a higher CKD risk (odds ratio [OR], 1.13; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08-1.18) and albuminuria (OR, 1.11; 95% CI, 1.05-1.17). The association between PM1 and CKD was more evident among urban populations, older adults, and those without comorbidities such as diabetes or hypertension. Every 1% increase in the PM1/PM2.5 ratio was related to the prevalence of CKD (OR, 1.03; 95% CI, 1.03-1.04), but no significant relationship was found for PM1-2.5. In conclusion, the present study demonstrated long-term exposure to PM1 was associated with an increased risk of CKD in the general population and PM1 might play a leading role in the observed relationship of PM2.5 with the risk of CKD. These findings provide crucial evidence for developing air pollution control strategies to reduce the burden of CKD.
